G20 Silver Economy Workshop Held in Rome

The “G20 Workshop Silver Economy and Active Ageing” was held in Rome on June 24, 2015. The workshop was organized jointly with the Turkish G20 Presidency and the Italian Government. Representatives of G20 members, social partners, international organizations and academia participated in the event.

Participants of the workshop expressed their opinions and exchanged views on the issue of ageing, which has turned out to be one of the important and widespread global problems. G20, representing the two thirds of the global population, is seen as the most suitable platform to discuss this global issue.

The objective of the workshop was to develop certain policy principles. It was widely agreed that silver economy not only increases welfare of senior citizens, but also it has the potential to create new jobs for young people in several sectors.

Among the possible policy principles discussed are equal access to healthy and active life; adjustment of workplaces in line with the needs of senior workers; fighting against age discrimination; focusing on youth employment in the provision of elderly care services and development of new products; ensuring the sustainability of pension systems; taking actions against the digital divide; developing targeted policies in cooperation with social partners and relevant stakeholders; and sharing best practices.

The outcomes of the workshop will be submitted to the G20 Employment Working Group for further discussion at its next meeting in July.
